What is a Giclee? Over the years artists have tried a variety of methods to reproduce their images. This allows many more people to enjoy art at a fraction of the cost of purchasing originals. In the past technology fell short of replicating the art exactly, and the methods required industrial hardware and materials. In the last few years a new process has been developed with the primary purpose of reproducing artwork. It is called Giclee (zhee' clay) printing. It takes inkjet printing, a technique familiar to many people with home computers, to the ultimate level of refinement. Today's Giclee printers can produce very large images on a variety of surfaces utilizing light fast inks. For oil painters reproductions can be printed directly onto canvas, thus assuring an edition virtually indistinguishable from the original. In the same way watercolor artists can have their paintings reproduced on fine quality water color paper. In addition to the superior quality, another great benefit of this process is that each image is produced individually so editions can be limited to very few prints if desired. This makes these editions more collectable and valuable. All of our Giclee Premier editions are limited to 100 prints. The Giclee editions offered by Stepping Stones take the entire process several steps farther. All the prints are made by Gary Peterson, who besides being one of the artists, has spent years learning the ins and outs of the printing process. So instead of placing the project in the hands of a technician who may not understand the special needs of artist, the artist himself is there to assure the result will be as close to the original as possible. In addition to this the artists can take each print and add hand painted accents. This can be in the form of glazes whick add a greater sense of depth and richness, or thicker painted passages which give the viewer the actual feel of oil paint application. This also ensures that no two pieces are exactly the same. The Giclee process is revolutionizing fine are printing and everyone benefits. The artist and collector both get the very best art reproductions ever made.
